What is a dental implant?

A dental implant comes in three parts: the implant itself which is a small titanium post inserted into the jawbone; an abutment (or extension) that is attached to the implant; and the crown (artificial tooth) that is placed on top of the abutment. Dental implants are commonly used to:

• Restore a person’s appearance
• Help with speech
• Improve the ability to chew
• Provide support for artificial teeth like crowns, bridges, or dentures.

There are two types of dental implants:

• In the bone (Endosteal) – these are the most common type of implant and are often used as an alternative for patients who wear bridges or removable dentures.

• On the bone (Subperiosteal) – these are placed on top of the jaw with metal framework posts that project through the gum to hold the implant in place. They are often used for people who are unable to wear regular dentures or who don’t have enough bone height to support an endosteal implant.

In addition to the two different types of implants, there are several different types of dental implant procedures:

Single Tooth Dental Implants – used to replace a single missing tooth.

Multiple Tooth Dental Implants – used to replace several missing teeth.

Full Mouth Dental Implants – used if all teeth are missing.

Sinus Augmentation – a procedure that changes the position of the sinus floor and improves the quality and quantity of bone in that area so that dental implants can be used on the upper rear jaw. This is normally one of the most difficult areas in which to successfully place dental implants due to inadequate bone quantity and density and sinus augmentation is a method used to correct this problem.

Ridge Modification – in this procedure the gum is lifted to expose an area where bone may be missing caused by a deformity in the upper or lower jaw. The space is filled with bone or bone substitutes to increase the integrity of the ridge which has been shown to significantly improve the appearance of the jaw and increase the chances of a successful implant.

What are some benefits of dental implants?

They look like natural teeth. Once the prosthetic tooth is fitted, the result looks completely natural. It sits flush to the gum line, so it’s not obvious which are the real teeth, and which is the implant.

They behave like natural teeth. Dental implants provide strength and functionality equal to natural teeth and are more stable than other tooth-replacement methods.

They can prevent bone loss. Bone density is lost around a missing tooth because there is no longer a root there to encourage the strengthening of the bone. A dental implant surgically inserted in the jawbone stimulates new bone growth and can help to prevent future bone loss.

They support facial structure. When bone density is lost as a result of missing teeth, the face can take on a sunken, aged appearance. Dental implants help to keep the jawbones strong, thereby improving and preserving facial structure.

They are long-lasting. The implant post itself has the potential to last a lifetime and with proper care, the crown can last between 15 to 20 years.

They are cost-effective. When compared to other restoration treatments that may have to be repeated, the lifetime costs of dental implants make them surprisingly cost-effective.

They don’t require diet modification. Unlike tooth loss or wearing dentures, dental implants allow people to eat normally without having to eliminate things like apples or steak from their diet.

They are easy to care for. Dental implants are treated just the same as natural teeth when it comes to caring and cleaning, i.e., brushing and flossing at least twice a day and regular dental and hygienist checkups.

They have predictable outcomes. Certain factors, such as smoking, will influence the success or failure of an implant but, overall, 98% are successful and are suitable for the vast majority of people.

Who are good candidates for dental implants?

To be considered for dental implant surgery, the patient should have strong, healthy gums, free from disease (such as gingivitis), and a jawbone strong enough to support the implant post. Disease and/or bone loss resulting from a tooth abscess will make the patient unsuitable for implant surgery unless bone grafts can be used to strengthen the jawbone before the insertion of the implants.
